I had long been irritated by media images of the Cape Flats mother—loud, oversexed, gap-toothed and vile. These were stubborn stereotypes that did not at all gel with the many, many women I knew who were decent, devout and determined to raise their children with a strong sense of values. Like my mother. So I persuaded my sister with the better memory to help me craft a book in honour of our mother Sarah but also in recognition of thousands of Cape Flats mothers that defy images imposed on them by others.
