It is an emotional story about the intertwined lives of the first Black Dean of Education at the University of Pretoria and his white Afrikaans students. I came to my leadership role in this bastion of apartheid as critical, judgmental and firm in my resolve to change them all; but the more I worked with these young people, the more I became aware of our mutual vulnerability in the wake of our devastating past. I would come to embrace them as my own.
